双元音是两个元音的组合，发音的音长与长元音的长度相近。我们发双元音的时候，舌头从一个发音位置滑动至另一个发音位置。英语音标中共有8个双元音，被分为两种：集中双元音3个和合口双元音5个。集中双元音是以中元音[ə]（即舌中部发音）结尾的双元音，所以叫做集中双元音。

先发前元音/e/,舌前部抬高，介于元音/e/和/æ/之间，倾向于/æ/的舌位，由/e/向/ə/滑动，不到/ə/音，发音即告结束；舌位由低到高，牙床由大于半开到略小于半开；唇形扁平到自然。
